Position Overview:
The Substitute Teacher at Holy Trinity Lutheran School provides classroom instruction and supervision in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher follows established lesson plans, maintains classroom routines, supports student learning, and creates a safe, respectful, and engaging environment consistent with the school’s values and mission.
- This is an on-call substitute position, and work availability may vary based on the school’s needs.
- Assignments may consist of full or partial school days.
Responsibilities:
- Instruction: Deliver lessons and learning activities according to the plans and materials provided by the regular classroom teacher. Clearly explain assignments and provide appropriate guidance to students.
- Classroom Management: Establish and maintain an orderly, respectful, and productive classroom environment. Enforce school and classroom expectations consistently and address disruptions appropriately.
- Continuity of Learning: Ensure that students remain engaged in their assigned work and that planned lessons, activities, and routines are completed as closely as possible.
- Student Support: Respond to students’ questions, clarify instructions, and provide individual or small-group assistance as needed.
- Student Supervision: Supervise students during class periods, transitions, arrival and dismissal, lunch, recess, and other assigned school activities to protect their safety and well-being.
- Assessment and Documentation: Collect completed assignments and document lesson progress, student participation, behavioral concerns, and other relevant information for the regular classroom teacher.
- Communication: Communicate professionally with students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents when appropriate. Promptly report significant academic, behavioral, safety, or health concerns to the appropriate school personnel.
- Flexibility: Adapt to different grade levels, subjects, schedules, and classroom environments based on the school’s needs.
- Positive Classroom Environment: Foster an inclusive atmosphere in which students feel respected, supported, and motivated to learn.
- School Policies: Follow all school policies and procedures, including those related to attendance, confidentiality, student conduct, technology use, and student safety.
- Emergency Procedures: Become familiar with and follow the school’s emergency and safety protocols. Respond calmly and responsibly during drills or emergency situations.
- Professional Conduct: Serve as a positive role model and uphold the values, mission, and professional standards of Holy Trinity Lutheran School.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must meet all applicable state, local, and school requirements for substitute teachers.
- Prior experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or working with children in an educational setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of classroom management practices and age-appropriate instructional strategies.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to present instructional material clearly and manage a classroom independently.
- Patience, sound judgment, adaptability, and a positive attitude when working with students of varying ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
- Ability to follow lesson plans, manage time effectively, and collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff.
- Commitment to maintaining student confidentiality and a safe, respectful learning environment.
- Successful completion of any required background checks, screenings, training, or certifications.
