How could something so big be so simple?
There is nothing small about the arrival of our Savior, Jesus. He is the world’s ultimate hope, the fulfillment of all of Scripture’s promises, and God in the flesh here to dwell with us. Christmas is not small, but it’s probably simpler than we make it out to be.
We overcomplicate Christmas. It’s a big event, to be sure, but ultimately Christmas is not about cookies, lights, shopping lists, and travel plans. In fact, the entire story of Advent shows that Christ’s arrival does not depend on us being ready. Our Savior arrives in the middle of our messiness to bring a simple, shining hope, one that will last for eternity.
As we get ready for Christmas, Advent is a season that cuts through the clutter. On the one hand, the world layers December with noise—shopping, schedules, sentimentality, and stress. On the other, Scripture calls us into a deeper simplicity: waiting, watching, and welcoming the Christ who comes. The series “Christmas Made Simple” acknowledges the complications of life in the modern world while pointing to the straightforward, profound truth that God comes to dwell with us in Jesus.
As we share this season with the members of our church and the hundreds of children at our school, it’s as good a time as any to remind ourselves how God’s plan to reconcile the world was revealed through the simple, to the simple: in a promise, a voice in the wilderness, a young mother’s “yes,” and a manger bed.
