Since the fall, humanity has been on a journey. Sin created a gap between man and God
with no easy way for us to reach the other side. Over time, man strove to create a bridge in order to reach God. In the midst, some created bridges out of false gods or from the idols of their sinful hearts. Some began to lose sight of God, yet they knew the grass had to be greener on the other side… if only man could figure out how to get there.
Time passed and thousands of bridges were created – jealousy, murder, vengeance, lust, and greed followed by countless others. Yet, man never seemed to reach that greener patch. Some felt they had reached it, but as time progressed they realized it was founded on false hope and temporary bursts of happiness.
After centuries of searching, and relying on priests to be able to communicate with God, God began to reveal more directly, His plan which was, and is for our good. God’s love never ceased. Prophets came and went until one miraculous day, the virgin Mary gave birth to a Son and named Him Immanuel – God with us, because He was and is God’s Son.
What many people before Jesus’s birth failed to realize, is that God, being omnipresent, was always with man. There was a divide and man lost access to God, but God never left man. God used His Son to carry out the plan He had all along in order to grant every man access to God. Jesus was the only one qualified to create this bridge, as He lived a perfect and sinless life. When the time came, Immanuel would die on the cross. While this doesn’t seem like a solution to man having access to God, it was. Jesus is the great high priest who, since His death and resurrection, has acted as a mediator giving man access to God, the greenest patch there is.
Today, many people are still striving to reach the green patch on the other side. They might be reaching out for God or even trying to work to get into heaven. They ask, “Lord, what must I do to obtain eternal life?”. The age old journey to mend the gap between God and man continues. Either people don’t believe that Jesus is the bridge or they have a desire to find or be the bridge themselves. They might build a bridge built from popularity, acceptance, fame, money, power, or independence. They too may see green qualities until the painted grass turns gray and they are left still longing for something else.
In reality, that search should be over. There is no journey because Jesus took the journey for us. We don’t need to build a bridge because we are already on the green patch of land with the Holy Spirit in our hearts. The journey is over. Jesus carried the burden of the cross taking on the sins of the whole world, making that very cross the perfect bridge to the green patch on the other side.
Unfortunately, we continue to create pseudo journeys trying to find another purpose to our life instead of the God-given purpose to go and make disciples of all nations telling them that their journey is over; Jesus has taken it for them. Jesus has taken it for you.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 – NIV)
