Counting Every Blessing

Just the other day I was watching the news when they featured a segment covering the severe impact of the flu season. Flu season has currently reached its peak and millions are getting sick. It’s a time when being physically well is even more appreciated than usual. We wash our hands frequently, take care of our sick family, sanitize the house, and pray for the sickness to go away and not spread any further. It’s a time when we count every blessing.

While watching the same news program I also rejoiced because the weather man announced warmer temperatures for the next few days. It’s been very cold this winter in Oklahoma. In fact, this 2018 winter in Edmond, OK has been far colder than last year’s winter in St. Louis, MO (I looked it up). When the cold weather rolls in, everyone talks about it. “It’s so cold today!” “Ugh! That wind chill is terrible!” Sometimes I have thought to myself, “I hate winter.” It’s a time when we appreciate a 50 degree day far more than usual. We hurry inside, even lock ourselves inside our homes, and we pray for warmer weather. It’s a time when we count every blessing.

Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:16-17

These words from James remind us that God gives many gifts to us, at all times in our lives. God doesn’t change. He daily and richly provides all that we need whatever the times may bring. The phrase, “Don’t be deceived…” particularly calls our thinking into question. Have we been deceived into thinking that a cold winter is inherently a bad thing? Do we forget the amazing functions our bodies perform to fight off disease? Do we sometimes look at our circumstances and label them “bad” based on our perspective alone and forget to see the good?

Indeed, God is good in every season; flu season, winter season, football season! God is even good to people who don’t believe in Him. That’s how good God is! God provides us with daily forgiveness through the gift of His Son Jesus Christ, the ultimate blessing. So, even if things don’t look so good in life, we have eternal hope that goes beyond temporal circumstances. I pray that whatever season or time you find yourself in right now, that you trust God is good. May the Holy Spirit give you the strength to give God the glory at all times by counting every blessing.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21
